Steel Connection Design

The Sykes team has formidable experience acting as the primary steel connection designer on projects of broad scope and complexity, including high-profile sports stadiums, long span roof designs and other specialty structures. We have designed connections for all kinds of forces, loads and environmental conditions, and for buildings with intricate kinesthetic architecture and geometric forms.

On projects with such challenging structural dynamics and tight schedules in play, it’s a distinct advantage that we can serve in a dual role. Acting as the Engineer of Record and dedicated steel connection designer, we can create detailed connection design much faster than any outside party. This typically accelerates the schedule, reducing the time required to bill material orders, coordinate and sign off on shop drawings and fabrication specs, and finalize construction sequencing. Our skill in using BIM tools and technology streamlines the process even further.

On every project we collaborate early and often with the steel fabricator throughout conceptual design, detailing and documentation. We can produce detailed shop drawings, or work closely with the fabricator’s chosen detailer to upload our detailed connection models into TEKLA (or Advance Steel) and then back-check their finished shop drawings. Working collaboratively in this way helps confirm the quality of the steel structure’s most important underpinnings through enhanced checks and balances.
