This $24.4 million community center brings best-in-class recreation and swimming amenities to residents of the Old Fourth Ward and the Auburn Avenue/King district. It houses a 25-yard lap pool and zero-entry leisure pool, fitness and weight room, climbing wall, multipurpose gymnasium, walking/jogging track, recreation classrooms and locker rooms. It will also include a multi-use event space for 200 people, a rooftop event area, a senior center, a computer lab, lounge and workroom areas, recreation staff offices, and even an Atlanta Police substation.
Designed to replace the historic Martin Luther King, Jr., Natatorium, which closed in 2012 due to structural concerns, the new two-story, 64,000-SF facility is located next door to Selena S. Butler Park, across the street from the King Memorial MARTA station. This culturally significant building is a steel and masonry structure with glass curtain walls and metal paneling, featuring bright color accents. The two-story promenade, which joins the two street-level entries and overlooks the gym and pools, is filled with light from a series of clerestory windows along the roof.
This fast-track design-build project opened October 30, 2017, on land donated by the Atlanta Housing Authority. It is funded through a $17 million grant from the $250 million Renew Atlanta Infrastructure bond, with additional funding provided by the City of Atlanta.
